About Glens Falls:

Glens Falls is a city located in Warren County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,354. The name is derived from the large waterfall in the Hudson River at the southern base of the city.

The City of Glens Falls is in the southern part of Warren County. The city has referred to itself as the "Empire City." Glens Falls is also known as "Hometown U.S.A.", a title given to it by Look Magazine in 1944. The city is located in the southeast corner of the county, surrounded by the Town of Queensbury to the North, East, and West, and by the Hudson River and Saratoga County to the South.

Glens Falls Geography:

Glens Falls is located at 43°18'44" North, 73°38'54" West (43.312104, -73.648250).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km2 (3.9 mi2). 9.9 km2 (3.8 mi2) of it is land and 0.3 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 2.54% water.

The city is located on the Hudson River, in the Adriondack foothills, at the border of Saratoga County, New York.

Glens Falls Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 14,354 people, 6,267 households, and 3,415 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,447.0/km2 (3,752.2/mi2). There are 6,811 housing units at an average density of 686.6/km2 (1,780.4/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 96.54% White, 1.30% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,267 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.3% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.5% are non-families. 36.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,222, and the median income for a family is $42,266. Males have a median income of $29,283 versus $21,606 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,137. 14.8% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.7% of those under the age of 18 and 9.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Glens Falls History:

The area was originally called Chepontuc, but was renamed The Corners. In 1766 it was renamed Wings Falls for Abraham Wing, who established a permanent settlement. After title was granted to Colonel Johannes Glen, the name was changed to Glens Falls.

Glens Falls became an incorporated village in 1837, but was re-incorporated in 1874 and 1887. The city charter was granted in 1907 at which time, the city became a separate entity from the Town of Queensbury into which it had formerly been incorporated as its largest village.
